Khotang Haleshi Tour, an insightful visit to Eastern Nepal

Haleshi Temple lies in Khotang district in eastern Nepal. It is situated between the two sacred rivers Dudh Koshi and Sun Koshi in a stunning cave that is thought to have existed for 6000 years.

This enchanting place has three enigmatic caves which are full of stunning creation of nature and god. An image of Lord Shiva can be seen in the first cave that is popular with name Haleshwar Mahadev whereas an image of Nandi who is Lord Shiva’s animal ride can be seen in the second cave. Considered to be Lord Shiva’s three heads, these caves are believed to have served as a home to Lord Shiva when he was hiding from the demon Bhasmasur. Thousands of pilgrims come at this mysterious place to worship Lord Shiva during the time of Maha Shivaratri and Bala Chaturdashi with great religious beliefs and they also ask for blessings for their wish to come true.

Buddhists believe Guru Rimpoche (Padmasambhav) meditated and attained salvation in this place. Followers of Buddhism come to worship here with the expectation of having long life. Kirati people consider this place to be the origin of Kirat religion. Besides religious significance, this sacred place has also become one of the major destinations for the travelers seeking meditation and peace of mind. Haleshi Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Drive from Kathmandu to Haleshi. Overnight at Haleshi Bazar

Day 2: Drive to Haleshi Mahadev. Haleshi Mahadev Darshan, tour around the shrine and drive back to Kathmandu

Haleshi Mahadev Temple is about 222 km away from Kathmandu and takes 8/9 hours to reach. The tour to this holy place starts from Kathmandu passing through Araniko Highway till Dhulikhel. From then onwards following B.P Highway, it continues via Khurkot while turning its route to Ghurmi. It then furthers to Okhaldhunga till it reaches Jayaram Ghat and crosses the Dudh Koshi River to finally arrive at Haleshi Bazaar. The tour is a 2 day package with one night stay at Haleshi. On day 2, the visitors take a tour of the temple and returns back to Kathmandu.
